Dr. Stone

A Manga with lots of science

Dr. Stone is a sci-fi manga book series about everybody on earth suddenly turning into stone. It’s an iconic series translated from Japanese to many languages (inc. English) and has 27 volumes*.

*volume 27 does not have a version in English yet.

The book’s story is about a 16-year-old boy, named Senku, that manages to awaken after being turned to stone. He attempts to recreate modern technology by scratch. The educative part of the manga is that when Senku is building, making, or mixing something, he explains how the experiment works and the ingredients used to make it happen. Of course, he does not talk directly to the reader but to other characters that appear in the manga.

Interesting sci-fi experiments in the books

From making iron to using electricity, Dr.Stone has lots of educational moments that explain how to make or mix certain items. These are my favourite moments:

-Building a battery

-Baking a ramen

-The lightbulb

Glass

These are only a miniscule amount of all the creations in the books.

What I liked about these books

It was exciting to see that if you are a scientific genius like Senku, starting with nothing but scratch, science is always possible. It was also exciting to see how Senku would achieve his dream: getting to space! At least now I know what to do if everybody turns to stone*!

*In the book, only humans and swallows turn to stone

There is also an animated series of Dr.Stone, consisting of 2 seasons.

The book’s rating, in my opinion, is 5 stars. Read it and you’ll understand what I’m talking about!
